Football & Math (Part 3)

Welcome to part three of my Football & Math Series! I am incredibly thankful to the Steelers and Ramon Foster for allowing me to use their space to teach math lessons to these eager students. Today, we are learning about adding and subtracting decimals.

To watch us do the activity, click play on the video below:

What you need:

·     Large open space or field

·     Stopwatch (or iPhone)

·     Paper

·     Pencil

Directions:

Step one: Time your child running a 20-yard dash. Record their time.

Step two: After a short break, have them run the 20-yards again and see if they can beat their time. Record the second time.

Step three: Use the sheet of paper and a pencil to write down the two times and find the difference of the two runs.

Step four: (Optional) Race against a partner. Add time or subtract time to mix it up.

Step five: (Optional) Round your times to the nearest tenth or hundredth of a second to calculate the time.

*Don’t forget to line up your decimals when adding and subtracting.

Teach your children the rounding song:

"Find your number, look right next door. Four or less, just ignore, five or more you add one more!"
